Queen's University Health Sciences Experiential Learning Centre is currently recruiting Volunteer Patients to support hands-on learning for students in medicine, nursing, and rehabilitation therapy. Volunteer Patients play an important role in healthcare education by sharing their real-life healthcare experiences and perspectives with students in medicine, nursing, and rehabilitation therapy. Volunteers participate in hands-on educational sessions that may include simulated clinical interviews and/or non-diagnostic, non-invasive physical examinations. These sessions give students the opportunity to practice communication, clinical, and interpersonal skills in a supportive and supervised learning environment. No medical expertise or specific health condition is required to become a Volunteer Patient. Volunteers of diverse ages, backgrounds, and experiences are welcome. Whether you participate occasionally or become a regular volunteer, your time and experiences can make a meaningful contribution to the education of future healthcare professionals. Dates and Times

Our Volunteer Patient opportunities are flexible and can be tailored to your availability. Each session typically lasts 1–2 hours and may take place in the morning or afternoon, Monday to Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Most volunteer opportunities take place between September and May, during the academic terms. Volunteers can choose which sessions they are available for and are not expected to commit to every available session. Whether you are able to volunteer occasionally or more regularly, we appreciate whatever time you are able to contribute. While our schedule is flexible, we ask that volunteers attend scheduled sessions reliably and provide as much notice as possible if they are unable to attend. Reliable attendance is important to ensure students have the Volunteer Patients they need for their scheduled learning activities.

Required Qualifications

No qualifications or certifications required. No health condition required - we have something for everyone!

Position Responsibilities

Volunteer Patients are asked to: Share relevant healthcare experiences and personal perspectives with students in an appropriate and comfortable manner; Participate in simulated clinical interviews and/or non-diagnostic, non-invasive physical examinations; Follow instructions provided by students, instructors, and program staff during educational sessions; Provide students with an opportunity to practice communication and clinical skills in a realistic learning environment; Provide feedback about their experience when appropriate; Respect the privacy and confidentiality of students, instructors, and fellow volunteers; Communicate their comfort level and let program staff know if they have any questions or concerns; Attend scheduled sessions reliably and provide as much notice as possible if they are unable to attend.
